At two stores, cards, decorations and festive trees have gone on sale in central London, almost a full five months prior to Christmas. Selfridges and Harrods both opened sections for Yuletide saying the winter products are being displayed earlier than any other time before.
An ice rink has been positioned by Harrods on the roof of their Knightsbridge shop and has 12 festive ice creams they created. Oxford Street’s Selfridges allows customers to design their own tree. They predicted their hats of fake animal fur would be in high demand including polar and stage bear styles.
International visitors have increased by 40% over the last 12 months prompting the early release in July of their merchandise for Christmas for the very first time. Geraldine James buying manager said Christmas comes earlier every year thanks to tourists’ demands.
She even thinks a capsule collection of Christmas items could be seen on offer throughout the entire year. A dozen types of festive themed flavours of ice cream have been produced by Harrods including mulled wine, mince pies and Brussels sprouts. For £2,999 a Father Christmas that is life size is being offered and they expect to sell tinsel that would be able to wrap over 20 football pitches.
